I have not been asked that question before…
Today was Franshhoek day. I (Bri) have been given the honor of leading a small group of girls 12-15 years old in a Bible lesson each Sunday we are there with them. Today, I began teaching one lesson, but ended up in a whole new direction that was totally unpredicted.
As shocked as I was by some of their questions, and their disbelief of my answers, I am encouraged by their willingness to be open and ask questions.
(Conversation about 5 minutes into small group)
Bri: Let’s look at Genesis to see if we can’t find our answer. Genesis is the first book of this book that we call the Bible. Can you tell me any stories which you know from Genesis?”
Young Girl: Creation.
Bri: Awesome, yes, any other?
(crickets)
Bri: Proceeds to tell the story of the Fall of Man
Young Girl: (interrupting) Okay, but was it really fruit that they ate-or was it sex? And how did they NOT know they were naked?
(before I could answer)
Young Lady: And why did God make man and woman? Why did he not just make man?
Bri: (answers the above questions)
Young Lady: Is it true that the Ten Commandments are just created by white man to make the black man suffer?
Bri: Well, I don’t think that would be true, especially since Jesus was not like me (holding out my white hand) but more like your color (grabbing her black hand and putting it next to mine)
(the whole group is now staring at me wide eyed)
Young Lady: HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT?
Young Lady: Why are all the pictures of him white then????
Young Lady: Jesus was not white?!?
Young Lady: Is it true that the Ten Commandments are just created by white man to make the black man suffer?
WHAT?!?! Who teaches this sort of thing?!
from what we’ve gathered, this is not an uncommon teaching of African tribal religions which mix aspects of Christianity with aspects of tribal mysticism.
that is incredible… I want to know how the rest of the conversation went…
This is an amazing little blog entry! Part of itis comical and part of it is really sad … I ran into this in Zambia, too.
I would love to hear how the discussion continued. Y’all are great!
